Mental & Emotional Health
Research shows that as many as one in six U.S. children between 6 and 17 has a treatable mental health disorder. Research also found that nearly half of children with these disorders did not receive counseling or treatment. As part of Children’s Wisconsin's vision of having the healthiest kids in the nation, an updated strategy now focuses on a new, broader definition of health – one that includes mental and emotional health, and looks at addressing the mental and emotional health crisis in new and innovative ways.
One of the new and innovative programs is Healthy Minds, a planned continuum of mental and emotional health e-learning courses designed for K-8th grade students. Healthy Minds focuses on mental and emotional health education and raising awareness among students, providing an engaging look at what makes a healthy mind and introducing the skills needed to help students lead healthy lives. Healthy Minds Kindergarten, Healthy Minds 3rd Grade, Healthy Minds 4th Grade, Healthy Minds 5th Grade, and Healthy Minds 6th Grade are now available for you to implement.
Healthy Minds aligns with National and Wisconsin Health Education Standards, as well as the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success: K-12 College- and Career-Readiness Standards for Every Student, and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s Social and Emotional Learning Competencies. Using online and offline classroom activities, the courses address such topics as:
- Recognizing feelings and emotions and learning how to deal with them
- Empathy and compassion
- Stress and how to deal with it
- Healthy relationships
- Common mental health disorders and concerns
- How to get help when needed
Easy to Implement
Healthy Minds can be used as a stand-alone mental and emotional health curriculum, or as an innovative supplement to other current curricula. Pre- and post-tests allow you to track your students’ knowledge and comprehension as they move through the course. As they are developed, each grade level course includes a comprehensive teacher’s guide that prepares teachers and counselors to use the course in the classroom.
