New courses launch for 2017-2018 school year!

October 6, 2017

Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin is pleased to announce three completely revised e-learning health education courses for kindergarten through eighth grade students. Now available for the 2017-2018 school year are Mission: Health 4th Grade, Mission: Health 5th Grade, and It’s UR Choice 6th Grade.

The original Mission: Health 4th & 5th Grade has been strategically divided into two distinct courses: Mission: Health 4th Grade and Mission: Health 5th Grade. It’s UR Choice 6th Grade has been completely updated and revised. All three courses are compatible with iPads (version 3 or newer) and other tablets.

In Mission: Health 4th Grade, students will learn the importance of proper nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and other healthy habits, including mindfulness. As students navigate through the course, they will learn different skills that will help them lead healthy lives, such as analyzing influences, accessing valid information, and setting goals. The all-new mindfulness content focuses on teaching students how to bring their attention to their breathing, which will help them pay attention to the present moment. Mindfulness helps control impulses and helps students with emotional regulation. An in-class mindfulness activity, Soles of the Feet, helps students ground their attention and stay focused by planting their feet on the floor like the roots of a tree.

Mission: Health 5th Grade expands on the 4th grade concepts of proper nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and other healthy habits, including mindfulness, with grade-appropriate lessons and activities. While navigating through the course, students learn about health and wellness topics such as balancing food choices with physical activity, possible barriers to healthy eating, how to obtain valid health information, how to differentiate between hunger and non-hunger cues to eating, and how to write a personal health goal and track progress toward that goal. The fifth grade mindfulness activity, Reset to Get Set, teaches students how to reset their mind and body through grounding poses and breathing exercises.

It’s UR Choice 6th Grade has been completely revised and updated, reflecting the most up-to-date health information on grade-appropriate alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs prevention. In the engaging course, sixth grade students learn about the most commonly abused drugs (alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, prescription drugs, and inhalants), as well as important life-skills that will help them stay drug-free, such as analyzing influences, resisting pressures, coping in stressful situations, and the difference between positive and negative risk taking. Also highlighted is what drugs do to the body, and how they can lead to addiction.
